A project increasing the value of Benozzo Gozzoli’s Tabernacle in Legoli_Pisa

Whit this project the Pisa-based LDA.iMdA architects applied to a contest published by Belvedere spa and ranked second. The Tuscan landscape is full of crosses, oratories, tabernacles and Marginettes (small buildings containing paintings or sculptures of the Holy Mary), usually “protected” by ancient cypresses.
“Impressed by the typical surrounding and by the small white oratory adorned with old cypresses, we decided to design something that could melt with the green; preserve the landscape beauty as a diffused heritage; and promote Benozzo Gozzoli’s art”, said the architects.
The stereotyped icon of the oratory and the aim to put together sensations related to lightness, shades, natural light, noise of the rain, sky and wind are the key elements that led to the design of a coffer which increases the value of and preserve the tabernacle. The external structure is a white-metal wire grid that ascends to create a home-like volume which hugs the glazed cabinet to protect the tabernacle from rain and sunlight. The grid varies in density, and it alternatively frames or obscures the surrounding environment as visitors move around it. Sitting inside the pavilion, that fits perfectly the surrounding environment, visitors can feel the nature, the weather and the different climates. Thanks to Touch Foil technology the glazed display cabinet becomes a map of Benozzo Gozzoli’s works of art across the world. By doing so, the pavilion is the starting point of a virtual journey across Benozzo Gozzoli’s heritage.
